lockdown. police are going door to door. this is the same area where his burned out truck was found yesterday. officers were hopeful tracks that surrounded that charred truck would lead them to him but this morning authorities are saying those tracks turned up nothing. authorities remind everyone dorner is considered armed and extremely dangerous. >> so far we have not located him. the search will continue through the night unless the weather gets to a point that it hampers the search. if that happens, the streets will be full of patrol cars. this area will have multiple two-man units. >> the search will go on. another new development, officers say they have found another vehicle linked to dorner. this one they found in san diego. officials are searching this truck for evidence and also fingerprinting it to make sure

that it is in fact dorner's. more than 1,000 police officers here in california and nevada are looking for dorner so no doubt the search continues. laura? >> there is another victim of the manhunt. two newspaper delivery women who just so happened to drive a vehicle that looked like dorner's. a 71-year-old woman was shot twice in the back by los angeles police. she and her 47-year-old daughter were delivering papers early thursday when police mistook their truck for dorner's. the officers opened fire riddling the pickup truck with bullets. the daughter received stitches to her finger. officers say this case is sending chills throughout the entire force. the fact that dorner is targeting police and is a former officer himself trained to do this kind of thing is very troubling. san francisco police say this is just a reminder protecting officer's personal information is critical. the president of the police

officers association says dorner's actions are not the norm, officers over the bay area face retaliation. >> we have two cases going on right now where we have full-time protection for two cops threatened by gang members. so this does happen. >> dorner's police and military training of course giving him a tactical edge in this chase. he knows the strategy police are using trying to hunt him down and he has no intention of surviving. that is forcing police right now to rethink their operations. we'll of course continue covering the story all morning long. coming up at 5:30, the direct connection between this case and a man consulting the oakland police department. the threat dorner made aimed at former l.a. police chief bill bratton. this morning the east coast is bracing for one of its strongest storms in years as some areas could see up to two feet of snow by tomorrow. ripple effect is being felt here in the bay area. dozens of flights to new york and boston are now canceled.

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live at sfo with the latest on the cancellations. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. first thing travelers are doing is walking up to arrival and departure board to make sure their flight is heading out or to see if it is canceled. there are cancellation this is morning. most travelers we spoke with have heard about this big snowstorm expected to be one of the worst in years to hit the northeast. and this morning cancellations here are up and down the board at sfo to places like boston, new york, and new jersey. now the airport duty manager tells us there are 52 cancellations so far. sort of a ripple effect that is hitting here. 35 departures, 17 arrivals have been canceled. back east early warning signs were there. snow across the midwest, rain and wind from the southeast. hundreds of flights were canceled in advance of the storm in places like jfk, laguardia,ory halaguardia,

o'hare in chicago. i spoke with a traveler who got here at 3:00 this morning to get to boston. everything was a go. flight looked like it was headed out and then it said canceled. we'll hear from her in 30 minutes. >> thank you very much. it is 5:05. good news is that it is friday. some people not so happy it's raining. we need rain, right, christina loren? >> we had a dry january. this is the first february storm. with it comes a cold blast of air and look at this. we're tracking snow showers in parts of the bay area this morning. just want to show you how much straight snow they are getting right now. in the mountains surrounding big sur taking you into the bay area, it's not just monterey county area getting hit with light snowflakes. boulder creek has been there. that's a pizza place and coffee shop, if you live there, send us your snow pictures.

as you can see, slick conditions across the board this morning. one of those mornings you don't want to dill y dally around the house. 40 in livermore. expecting numbers to drop off. once the skies open up a bit, the clear skies mean all of the warmth is going to radiate into the atmosphere. we expect temperatures to get close to freezing in livermore and concord through the next couple hours and that's when it could get interesting. we'll continue to update you and show you where the snowflakes are developing as that information becomes available on the radar. i'm tracking it like a hawk this morning. 53 degrees inland. bayside, 52. at the coast, 52 for you. cold enough for a jacket. bring that umbrella as well. make sure your windshield wipers are ready to go this morning, right, mike? >> that's exactly right. make sure you have wiper fluid. even with mist you may need to get dust and mud off your windshield. 101 moves smoothly across the

golden gate bridge. getting ready for north bay into the city commute. look at the north bay itself. san rafael moves smoothly. damp roadways but wet, not so much. slick off-ramps. watch that. fog is showing up on road weather index. petaluma, santa rosa, that's orange on the maps, be careful for that. may be ice on local streets. not so much here. toward the maze and approach. oakland to the right. look here lafayette a new crash west 24 off the walnut creek interchange. sounds like everything is out of lanes. i'll track it. back to you. >> thank you very much. commuters should expect delays at the richmond san rafael bridge toll plaza. starting this weekend workers will replace old equipment that's used to collect tolls. caltrans officials say it could cost 50-minute delays. work will continue for several weekends and it should be done by early march. brace yourselves. movie fans, tom cruise in a t-shirt back in the day and the need for speed all in 3-d. >> feel the need.

texas governor rick perry campaigning to steal businesses from california. he plans to visit during a four-day trip that starts on sunday. he plans to tell people texas is better for business because there's no income tax and more lenient labor and environmental laws. earlier this week texas launched a radio ad campaign aimed at california businesses. pressure continues to grow on apple this morning to slice off fruits of its labor and then give it out to investors. scott mcgrew, apple has a ton of money and appears little plan to use it. >> apple has more money in cash in a savings account than our company comcast nbc universal is worth total. it has just enough money or more money sitting around to build a new san francisco 49ers stadium 100 times over. according to wikipedia, a space shuttle launch cost half a billion. at 140 billion in savings, apple has enough money to pay for

every single space shuttle launch ever. an investor is pressuring apple to give that money back to investors in the form of a dividend. apple does pay a dividend but it makes so much money even that dividend doesn't keep up with the increase in the cash pile. we'll continue to watch this story. meanwhile, let's check friday markets. we'll turn to bertha coombs live at cnbc world headquarters. >> he accused them of being like his grandmother never wanting to spend money because they need cash all the time. very colorful language. futures are flat. stocks closed down yesterday but well off the lows. at one point dow was down 100 points. worries about the european debt crisis. a scandal brewing in spain. the economic risks are to the downside. investors disappointed because

we have a less than expected productivity report. today we'll get data on the trade deficit and wholesale trade. the dow losing 42 points to 1 13,944. nasdaq slipping another three to 3165. scott, we're all bracing for snow and likely going to be very light trading volume between wall street and up in boston all of those mutual funds. a lot of folks putting in shorter days. >> i would imagine so. have a safe weekend. thank you much. the president met with house democrats on thursday to give them a preview of the state of the union address and he's going to give that next week and that speech will include new calls for green energy. that's good for silicon valley. and many immigrants here hope he'll push for immigration reform. we talkeded about this in the past. skilled workers who need visas to stay and don't get them despite the fact they are building companies. they can't get a visa but hopes

to stay another way. >> we need any entrepreneur from all over the world to come to this country and maybe give them six to nine months, probably a year, just to prove the concept and see if at the end of this year they have 1% they are good to go. >> we talked about this before. entrepreneurs from other countries come here to be educated and then america says go away. they say we'll just build a company back in our home country. we've seen this with india. potentially with italy. would prefer to stay here and employ americans. >> strange reality. >> interesting. >> thank you very much. 5:15 right now. our reality outside is raindrops keep coming on down falling on all of our heads. >> it's one of those mornings. it's friday. get the day over with so you can enjoy the weekend. this morning even though we usually see friday light, we'll check with mike. i can tell you i couldn't drive as fast as i wanted to to work this morning because of the slick conditions out there.

so just make sure you plan accordingly especially if you take the little ones to school. it's wet across the bay area. and definitely some puddles and ponding leftover from yesterday as well. we actually picked up good rainfall totals over a quarter inch up in the north bay. right now it's in the south bay that is seeing the most activity all of the activity now starting to push south of the golden gate bridge. let's talk about some of the interesting developments so far this morning. we're still tracking a straight snow/rain mix at about 500 feet. here's what's so cool. boulder creek right here, look at this. you see the white flash. they're at 500 feet. we had that snow level drop. if you have any pictures to show us, send them in. it's cold out there. it's wet out there. you'll need to give yourself extra time this morning as showers will continue all of the way through the morning rush. let's talk about that and time out what we're expecting. stop the clock at 6:00 a.m. offshore we still have moisture around. we're still going to see stray showers and then we'll clear you out after that morning rush

comes to a close. i know. it's friday. 4:00 p.m. we stop that clock drying out. what i do want to point out big-time heading into southern california, it's a big travel day. you'll be traveling with this system and we are getting snow showers right now over the grapevine. not shut down but we'll watch that for you. mike and myself all morning long. 54 in livermore. 53 in fremont. getting into the weekend, look at this. saturday into sunday, temps are going to be so cold. we're talking about near records in the middle of winter. just about as cold as it gets around here saturday morning. sunday it won't be quite as frigid to start. we'll hold onto the upper 50s in the afternoon hours. 5:17. mike knows those roads around here. wouldn't you say people need to give themselves extra time? >> you can't drive as fast as you want to. you never can because that's barely under flying level speeds. we love you for that. a smooth drive. roadway is not completely dry in san jose. not showing puddling on the shot

of 101. our map shows you it's a nice flow of traffic but over on the edge through the foothills and down here in santa cruz mountains, you do have pink showing up on road weather index as christina talked about a dusting of snow. bear creek a windy roadway but folks do use it. keep that in mind. might be slippery. earlier crash south 17 toward lexington reservoir that cleared from lanes. take you over to the east bay and tri-valley. a smooth flow. green on road good. yellow down to 60. the green highlight over the surface area means more slick conditions, wet roads from earlier overnight rains. keep that in mind if you head east through this area or maybe north on 80 heading over toward tahoe in a sense basically 80 has chain requirements. keep that in mind. likely lasting at least through the morning when the sun can warm things up. 580 a smooth drive. wet roads toward castro valley

y. there's a little slowing approaching the san mateo bridge toll plaza. let's get a live look. this might be why. wet roads approaching the scene. water on the lens and on the roadway. lighter flow moving smoothly across the flat section. a high wind advisory overnight. the sign says that at the toll plaza but chp says we're okay with it and christina says nothing from the national weather service. let me talk you through this shot. highway 84. these lights right here by the radio towers that we talk about, that's eastbound heading over toward the fremont and newark side. road crews are there blocking a couple lanes. i want to show it to you where it's clearing up where we can see it from the peninsula side. back to you. all right, mike. the chp will get a helpful boost later this morning. more than 85 new california highway patrol officers will be sworn in during a graduation

ceremony. it will take place at the chp academy in west sacramento at 10:00 a.m. the raiders say they have a defensive plan to avoid tv blackouts. they are planning to block off 28 sections of the upper deck at oakland's coliseum. capacity will drop to 53,000 seats making the stadium with the fewest seats in the nfl. last season the raiders televised all but one home game. how about this? baltimore ravens quarterback joe flacco, the super bowl mvp, was ready and willing to do anything but any means necessary to beat the 49ers in that big game. even cheat. with ravens up by three and four seconds left on the clock, flacco was heard telling two teammates on the sidelines that if the kicker happened to break free, he wanted his guys to jump out on the field and tackle him to make sure he didn't score the game winning touchdown. flacco happened to be wearing a

falling. we don't know yet if she was pushed or fell or if it was accidental or what it is. we know she was found on the ground out there this morning. she has died. she could have fallen from as high as the 11th floor out there. we have a crew on the scene out there and we'll bring you any developments as soon as we get them this morning. it is 5:23. alameda family will learn later today whether the lawsuit against police and firefighters that they have brought up against them can actually move forward. the family says first responders did nothing and just watched their loved one try to drown himself at crown beach on memorial day back in 2011. an attorney for the city of alameda argues the situation is tragic, first responders did not have any legal obligation to help. raymond zach waded into the bay that afternoon. police say they did not go after him because he was suicidal and possibly dangerous. firefighters say they were not certified for land/water rescues. zach succumbing to hypothermia

and drown. the city of alameda changed its policies to first responders are better trained to deal with water rescues. mineta san jose international airport could soon be home to a brand new private airport for google executives. that's called living large. the $82 million project would include an executive terminal, hangars and ramp space to accommodate google's largest business jets. this proposal in the airport would bring in nearly $3 million a year in rent and would create hundreds of permanent jobs and up to 200 construction jobs. the san jose city council expected to vote on the proposal coming up in april. >> cool to have your own wing in the airport. want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. soggy start to our morning. >> good friday morning to you. look at what we have to drive through. air quality will be better off and we needed this rain. i just want to zoom in and show

you some of the more impressive areas. right now it's the south bay that's getting hit the hardest. you can see san francisco nice and slick. the showers are starting to push to the south. still count on a slick and slow drive to work. we'll get particles from mike in just a moment. want to show you how temperatures continue to drop off in the east bay, livermore and concord. a rare chance for some east bay valley level snowfall this morning. that's what we are watching for. we'll let you know as things develop throughout the morning. if you are leaving right now, grab your coat and bring your umbrella. bayside, 52. that goes for the coast coming in clutch this morning here's mike inouye. >> good morning, folks. no major crashes this morning. right now despite the wet conditions we have seen a number of minor accidents indicative of slicker roadways and a tough time stopping for folks. 880 through fremont, headlights southbound past the truck scales over on the right side of your screen and auto mall parkway on the left side. we're looking at the peninsula as well. northbound 101 about the same amount of traffic volume as you

good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. 5:30. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. we continue to follow breaking news out of the south bay this morning where police right now at this hour investigating the death of a 24-year-old woman in san jose. right now police blocking off the area near the city heights condo complex. that's at st. james and san pedro. as of now it's simply unclear exactly how this woman died but police say they believe it appears that she had fallen from one of the higher floors at that complex. the coroner now on scene. >> currently we have no indication of foul play or suicide at this time. that's why we'll turn the case over to the coroner's office. >> reporter: sounds like it could be a tragic accident. >> it could be. we're interviewing the witnesses about that. >> it's unclear whether the

woman lived in the building. we'll continue to follow the situation. we'll bring you more information as soon as we get it into the newsroom. we also continue to follow a developing story out of southern california where a manhunt extended to nevada. police are searching for christopher dorner, a former lapd police officer accused of shooting a riverside police officer and two other people. marla tellez is following the story from newsroom this morning. >> reporter: 33-year-old christopher dorner has been on a rampage really since sunday night when he shot and killed a former colleague's daughter and her fiance in orange county. this morning he continues to elude thousands of police officers statewide and in nevada as you mentioned. nevada because dorner has a home in las vegas. much of the search this morning continues to focus though on the resort town of big bear where they found dorner's burned out truck yesterday. unfortunately that's all they found. as a result big bear remains on

lockdown today. about 80 miles west of big bear is down down l.a. where lapd is headquartered and officials say all 10,000 officers are considered targets of dorner so security has been stepped up. >> harden the target to protect the employees that work in these facilities. we stepped up security and it's very visible. >> reporter: officials say motorcycle officers aren't even allowed to ride on their bikes so they've been assigned to squad cars all in the name of safety. dorner was discharged one week ago today from the navy where he was a reservist. the irony here is he was trained by the lapd but they say his training is still no match. >> that will just make it a little bit more difficult but it's just a matter of time before the elements come together. >> reporter: investigators in san diego say they found another car linked to dorner. they are fingerprinting that

truck this morning to make sure it is in fact dorner's. >> no doubt about this one. a bizarre story all of the way around. there are many local connections to it. some of dorner's anger being targeted directly at bill bratton. he's the former l.a. police chief and current oakland police consultant. bratton is on dorner's list. dorner sent a package to anderson cooper at cnn earlier this month and inside that package an lapd coin given to dorner by bratton and a note saying thanks but no thanks, will bratton. that coin was riddled with bullet holes. bratton says he's a target because he signed off on dorner's firing. >> i was the chief of police that signed off on his discharge from the lapd. so in terms of his grievances, i could understand. >> bratton was recently hired by oakland just last month to try to help curb violences in that city. we'll be following this story

all morning long. coming up at 6:00, we'll look at the chain of events leading up to this point. plus, on lockdown. people right now shuttering their doors and windows in one mountain view town. 5:34. tonight family and friends will remember the life of a bay area teen found dead at a fairfield park. the gathering will be in honor of 13-year-old genell conway allen tonight at 6:30 in the same area her body was found a week ago. federal agents are helping in the case trying to figure out how genelle ended up in fairfield. investigators remain tight lipped on suspects or a motive. a school in fairfield has been ransacked by robbers. two armed men tied up a janitor and stole 40 ipads from sam yeto continuation high school. the custodian was told to take them to where the ipads were

stored. the man was duct taped to a desk before leaving the scene. the robbery was the third in four months in which thieves targeted that school's ipads. 5:35 right now. rain coming down. christina saying it could be cold enough to see snow. >> we're picking it up on the radar. good morning to you. i live for this sort of thing. you can see the pink is a mix of rain and snow. the straight white is straight snowfall coming down at about 500 feet this morning. so it's really going to be dependent on how cold we get whether or not we get any of that snowfall at the valley level. it's possible in places like livermore this morning. if you live or you'll travel around the santa cruz mountains this morning, take it easy out there as we have had a mix of rain and snow and straight snow reported. around boulder creek, 39 degrees to start you off in livermore this morning. it's cold and temperatures will continue to drop as we head throughout the next couple hours. that means our chance will get better and better as we head through 8:00 a.m. we'll watch that for you very closely this morning.

43 degrees to start in san jose. 43 in sunnyvale. you'll need your umbrella today. showers will deteriorate as we head throughout this evening. that means we'll be nice and dry for the weekend. that's the good news. 53 at 4:00 p.m. 52 inland. 52 at the coast today. seven-day outlook is ready to go in my next report to help you make those weekend plans and we'll talk about the more prominent events that are going to be happening around here. lots to do in the bay area as we head through saturday and sunday. 5:36. let's check your drive. that's going to be a busy one today. >> good morning. won't be your typical friday light. you'll have slicker roadways. we see this at the san mateo bridge. water on the lens causing an issue. water on the road a concern. slick roadways mean tougher stopping time. slow down if you can. no delays across the san mateo bridge despite the sign that says heavy winds. chp says not any concern as far as drivers go anymore. that was overnight. we'll show you the map. another issue 680 southbound at scott creek road. there's a crash off of the roadway up the embankment.

two cars there. no injuries reported. you also see in the area that pink, that means there may be ice on local streets and many peaks around the bay area. we'll take you to the north bay. a quick peak with camera to show you conditions going on. cars and slicker roadways. damp roadways right here. again, back to the map, the orange in that area and a little farther north means there may be fog that could be thick enough to impede your view of the roadway through novato and coming down out of petaluma. highway 37 okay until you reach the merge with 101. smooth drive interstate 80 slowing out of the area and continuing toward tahoe bring the chains. that's for roadways driving out of the area. christie smith is over there at sfo. there may be flight delays not because of local storms but what do have for folks flying out of the area? >> reporter: i checked in with airport duty manager here at sfo and he says the number of cancellations just keeps going up and up.

of course travelers are hoping that this won't affect them but for many this morning that we have run into, it already has. we'll show you the departure board. all of this because of the snowstorm moving in back east. very easy to spot who is delayed here at sfo. they have pulled out the blankets, sleeping bags and are in it for a long haul. one woman came in at 11:00 with her husband and at the last minute found out the flight to boston was canceled. it's been a rough stretch flying. >> washington, d.c. got canceled and then over here got canceled into sacramento and it's just -- this is unheard of. we've traveled for years and we just -- i understand there's a storm back east. i'm sure that's the reason. >> reporter: as of late last night airlines across the country had canceled more than

"today in the bay's" tracie potts is live on capitol hill with all of the details on brennan's confirmation hearing. tracie, a lot going on. busy day for everybody. >> it's been a busy time when it comes to confirmation hearings and we have brennan to gave a strong defense of the use of drones by this administration. this is something he was right in the middle of. there are lots of questions here lawmakers want to know if the obama administration has been using these drones against american citizens in a couple of cases. we know yes. brennan said if he's are americans who have gone overseas and aligned themselves with al qaeda, they have to know we're going to do whatever possible to save lives. this is not something that's done as retribution. it's something done when they believe there's an imminent attack. he also talked about back in the bush administration when he was a deputy director of the cia interrogation tactics in question back then.

gold. she told them there wasn't any. and then stood at gunpoint while one of the men ransacked the house. >> i was praying my son would not come in because he told me if someone would come in they would shoot him. >> once you have them putting a gun on someone that's defenseless, she uses a cane. how could you do that? explain that. there are people out there that have no feelings. >> the two men eventually left her alone in a room but were in her home for another hour. she finally hid in the closet and called her daughter who called police. redwood city police locked down the school across the street and managed to catch one of the suspects. they are still looking for the gunman and woman who acted as a lookout. this morning caltrans telling california drivers its bridges and freeway over crossings throughout the state are in fact safe. the state transportation department completing an extensive review of testing data

ever the sacramento bee raised questions about the foundation on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. caltrans says its experts pored over 23,000 tests finding results reliable in all but 11 of those cases. engineers then conducted structural tests to determine whether that con treat was stable. fewer police officers, more overtime, the nbc bay area investigative unit has exclusively obtained financial data that shows while overall payroll in santa rosa decreased by 10% from 2011 to 2012, overtime increased by 35% totalling a $4 million difference. in his state of the city last night, san jose mayor chuck reed said overtime might increase this year. >> we'll increase it next year because we need to make sure that our public is protected and overtime is one of the ways to do that. only on a short-term basis. we know that you can't do that much overtime all the time. >> mayor reed spent a good part of the address talking about the

this is "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. thank you very much for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news in san jose where a woman has died after falling from a high floor of an apartment complex. police say the victim is 24 years old. investigators say there's no indication of foul play or suicide. it's happening at the city heights complex in downtown san jose on west st. james street. police say the coroner is on the scene and will take over the investigation. we also continue following a developing story in southern california where a manhunt is now spreading over several counties for a former lapd officer and navy reservist christopher dorner. dorner right now accused of killing a couple in orange county and then shooting three officers in riverside county. one of those officers ended up dying from his
